Zymergen uses data, machine learning, automation, and software tools to unlock the power of biology through technology. It has historically been difficult to reliably engineer microbes due to the complexity of modelling cellular processes. Using their automated Design-Build-Test-Analyze cycle to treat strain optimization as a heuristically guided search process, using integrated core software and data IP, Zymergen has created an approach that is cheaper, faster and can achieve higher performance. The company currently designs and optimizes bugs for manufacturers, while it also builds IP to potentially design and build its own products in the future.
